Avon – Creative Still Life

Avon is one of the world’s largest cosmetics companies, with lines that include fashion, jewellery, and wellness products. In the UK, they reach six million women with their brochures every three weeks. Amplitude Media has been a film and photography supplier to Avon’s head office in Northampton since 2015; a relationship that’s grown considerably in recent years. Avon refresh their product offering every season, and in late 2019 asked Amplitude to provide Creative Still Life photography to be featured in their magazines and on their website.

Creative Still Life photography falls somewhere between standard white-background product shots and more creative lifestyle or model shots. Creative Still Life uses coloured backgrounds and simple props to create images that are striking, show off products, and imbue the product with a little extra personality, all of which helps sell the product to the consumer.

We shot two Creative Still Life projects back-to-back, each of which required its own colour palette and styling, and required a different approach when it came to props and lighting.

The first project featured a colour palette of eight colours, ranging from dark blue to pastel pink, and simple geometric props. Products shot in this project included necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings, as well as giftsets combining different jewellery types.

The second project range encompassed everything from jewellery (rings, necklaces, earrings…) to accessories (hair slides, scrunchies, glasses chains…) to handbags. The colour palette consisted only of four colours, all varying shades of blue and yellow, and rather than creating sets using props, we used coloured flooring and walls combined with angled lighting and deep shadows to give each product its personality.

We delivered Creative Still Life shots for both projects fully edited and colour matched.
